Family Halloween Costume Ideas: Make Them or Buy Them

Coordinated family Halloween costumes are half the fun of the season, and they are a wonderful excuse for a hands-on family project. Whether you love to sew or would rather click add-to-cart, here are group costume ideas plus an honest look at when to make versus when to buy.

Make It or Buy It?

Making costumes is a real homeschool project in disguise. Kids practice planning, measuring, cutting, and following steps. Buying is the sanity-saver when your season is full. Most families do a happy mix of both.

When Making Is Worth It

  • The costume is mostly clothes you already own plus a few felt add-ons
  • Your kids are old enough to help and want to
  • You have a simple pattern and a weekend afternoon to make things

Some ideas that could be worth trying are these 2 Hour costume ideas, Unicorn Onesie for kids, or some of these cute toddler costumes.

A fun idea would be to piece together a family Minions costume with pieces like this one. While I linked to one you can buy, if you look at the link, you’ll see it’s made of things you probably already have and maybe something you can easily make.

Another great idea, if you have a Cricut, would be to make the 7 dwarves names for shirts. You can see this example that you could buy, but you’d be able to save some money and make things yourself. Don’t forget your dwarf hats!

If you have a child old enough to learn to sew, now is a great time to teach this lifeskill. They can help with various different parts and it can be a lot or a little bit, depending on their age.

When Buying Is the Smart Call

  • You need something safe and durable for lots of wear
  • The look needs details that are hard to sew
  • Your calendar is already packed
  • You have the extra money in your budget

Family Theme Ideas

  • Storybook characters from a favorite read-aloud
  • A nature theme: sun, moon, stars, and clouds
  • Community helpers the kids look up to, like police officers, fire fighters, etc.
  • Bible heroes for a church trunk-or-treat ( I love this idea for the Armor of God)
  • Be a bunch of jungle animals and use these patterns to make your costumes.
